about
When I was a kid, I imagined there was a string that unrolled as I walked, leaving a trail behind me. If I came around an object from one direction, I would be sure to go back the same way, or the string would wrap around it and get stuck.
I also imagined that my nose would spontaneously begin to draw lines as it moved through space, like an etch-a-sketch. Drawing a line made me responsible for its erasure. This could be done by retracing it perfectly, but I'd always miss the first line slightly, drawing a new one just parallel. I'd have to go back on that one before trying again, but I'd miss it too, leaving me to wiggle my head around for minutes at a time to retrace all my unsightly lines.
One day, I told my mom about the string, and she made scissors with her fingers and snipped it. I never got tangled again.
lyrics
I have a string tied around my bones
I come down the stairs, it follows
Invisible line behind me sticks to the walls, tries to remind me the shape of places I'll be next
When I take three right turns and one left
I draw myself in the sand, a bead on a rail in a doctor's office
I'm shaking my head till I have finished tracing lines in the air where my new head is facing
And I have a string that follows me home
Suddenly you are making scissors and you are cutting my thread with your fingers
Reeling me in to go like this and now I can spin around the staircase again before going up
